savagemama: Stout hill to climb

When I moved to Missoula the first time in 1996 I hadn’t been far beyond South Carolina before. I’m not sure what compelled me to look into living so far from home or to consider going to school at a university other than my own for a semester. I was 19 and just wanted to see some place I’d never seen, I told my friends and family who were all a little perplexed. When I got to Missoula I kind of couldn’t believe I’d done it. I’d gotten in a car and come West. The mountains were white, the wind blew and this Southern girl was, for the first time, on her own. The learning curve was steep.
